07Silver continues to be the favorite color for new cars in North America. Survey results show that about 57% of new cars are either silver of black in color.
This year is the ninth in which silver has been the most popular color for new cars. The silver paint used by car makers today is much more advanced than the paint that was used when this color first became popular. Paint technology and car spraying techniques and systems are constantly improving enabling car makers to offer ever increasing ranges of colors for their vehicles.
Although silver, black and white remain firm favorites with new car buyers the Ford car company have had succes with varied eye catching colors including Molten Orange and Grabber Blue. The new, subcompact Ford Fiesta that will arrive in the US next year will be available in a range of vibrant, bright colors including bright green and red as well as the popular silver, black and white.
The strong European small car market tends to have more color variety with around 37% of small vehicles sporting red, green, brown or blue paintwork.
Auto manufacturers have also become far more interested in making their interiors more attractive by using accent colors. New paints are being introduced that include glass particles that make the paint shimmer and shine.
Its well known that different colors can have a psychological influence. Red, for example, has been said to stimulate the body and mind whereas blue is believed to have a calming, soothinig effect. There is some debate among psychologists regarding the effects of color therapy.
The most popular color choice for new cars fifteen years ago was green with only about 1% of new cars in silver. Color fashions can change with the wind making it near impossible to predict the next hot trend.
