It was the 19th century when the first duke of Wellington – Arthur Wellington instructed his shoe maker to make some modifications to his Hessian boots.
The Hessian boots had a low heal and a pointed front which made them extremely suited to mount horses and wear stirrups. They were made of leather which was a robust material but when it came to water it would just soak through and make them very uncomfortable.

The weather proof-ness of the boots worn by the soldiers in World War 1 became one of major importance as it was clear that something needed to be done.With the help of the first duke of Wellington and the need which arose from World War 1, the Wellington Boots “wellies” where born.

During World War 1 and World War 2, Wellington boots manufacturing increased dramatically. As time went on, there were numerous styling improvements, such as thigh high protection, and all this was aimed at protecting the soldier’s health and improving comfort in the flooded trenches.

Not long after this, popularity in the public increased and people began wearing them in all types of terrible weather.The 1850s saw a big commercial uprising, when farmers and laborers began trading in there clogs for the water resistant rubber rain boots.
